Build a budget from your own quotes
Compare Central Valley, Guanacaste and Southern Zone scenarios using the costs you enter. Keep monthly spending, moving and setup costs, and a separate emergency reserve distinct.
Three things to know before entering amounts
- Use US dollars throughout. Convert any colón or other-currency quote yourself before entering it. Keep the original quote, exchange rate and conversion date in your notes; this tool does not convert currencies.
- The monthly allowance is your comparison target. It is not income advice or an added expense. The result compares it with your monthly spending to show what remains or how far your estimate exceeds it. Setup costs and your separate reserve are handled separately.
- Blank means you still need an estimate; 0 means no cost. Do not fill unknown costs with zero just to complete the result. Use those blanks as your next-quote list.
Keep your comparison: enter a scenario for each region you are considering, then use Save Scenarios as CSV before leaving or reloading this page. The download keeps the regions separate. Add quote sources, dates and unanswered questions in the CSV so you can update it later.
We have retired the fixed housing-only comparison on this page. The itemized planner below uses your own assumptions and does not predict savings from relocating.

Costa Rica Planning Verification Checklist
Use this page as a planning aid, then confirm changing details with official Costa Rican sources or qualified professionals. Last reviewed August 24, 2026.
- Verify immigration and residency details with DGME or a Costa Rica immigration professional.
- Confirm Caja/CCSS, private insurance, banking, tax, property, and municipal details close to action.
- Treat forum advice, old screenshots, and one-person anecdotes as prompts to verify, not as instructions.
2026 Budget Stress Test
Costa Rica budgets should be tested against less convenient assumptions before they guide a move.
- Run a conservative version with higher rent, private healthcare, car costs, imported goods, insurance, and exchange-rate movement.
- Separate one-time setup costs from recurring monthly spending.
- Keep an emergency reserve for medical care, travel home, housing changes, and bureaucracy delays.
Compare your regional budget scenarios
Enter your own monthly quotes in US dollars. If a quote uses another currency, convert it before entering it and keep the exchange-rate date in your exported notes; this tool does not convert currencies. Switch regions to compare assumptions. Export the scenarios before leaving the page; values are not retained afterward.

If monthly costs total $2,000, setup is $3,000 and reserve is $5,000, expected first-year spending is $27,000. Cash to have available is $32,000. These numbers illustrate the calculation, not local prices.
Your scenario
Enter all categories, including 0 where appropriate, for a complete comparison.
Expected first-year spending = 12 monthly totals + setup. Cash to have available adds a separate reserve; that reserve is not planned spending. Estimates do not determine affordability. Exported CSV contains only the values you enter.
